Chapter 12

“GREETINGS, HUMAN! You have chosen a strange method of traveling here.”

“Does it make a difference how I enter the arena?”

“The standard paths differ significantly from the paths of Chaos. First of all, you will not have the opportunity to return to your world at your own will. You will be able to leave my arena only at the behest of a servant of Chaos.”

I could only grin. The Interrogator, of course, forgot to mention this “small detail.” How could I think that he would be any better than the Inquisitor? Didn't the interactive neural network say that these two creatures were echoes of the same entity? And clearly not the most honest fellow.

“I know why you were sent here, human. All that's left is to decide how you plan to get it. The extractor will become available if you complete the twenty-seventh wave. It will also be available to you after the twenty-fifth wave if you don't start receiving rewards. You need to choose.”

“Whoever sent me here said that it would take twenty-five waves to get the extractor. Not twenty-seven.”

“Since when did a simple hunk of steel become a dangerous weapon?” I asked sarcastically. “Does the esteemed Fog Stalker think I’ll simply be able to throw it through my opponents?”

“You can make a weapon out of it. I know about the magic of the ancients, human.”

“In that case, the respected Fog Stalker should know about such a thing as a rollback. Creating a spear from steel is not a problem. The problem is what will happen to the creator after the spear is destroyed. I will turn into a vegetable that any monster could devour.”

“You don't need to create a spear, human. Crossbow bolts will do. They are steel in essence and will not cause recoil when destroyed.”

“I have nothing to say to this wild assumption. Can the esteemed Fog Stalker remind me what kind of creatures appear in his arena? Are they ordinary humans who die from simple spear wound? From what I recall, the arena is populated by the spawn of Pharapho and the Abyss. Tenacious, dangerous and quite difficult to destroy creatures. Even if I create crossbow bolts and make them pierce each monster that appears in the arena ten times, this will have little effect on the overall danger. Or am I mistaken?”

"No, you're not mistaken.” The Fog Stalker thought for a moment and cast another glance at the meter-long cube of pure steel that I had dragged along with me. Which had proved quite a daunting task. Not only was it heavy, but I also had to make special notches to grip it properly.
